Draft National Data Governance Framework Policy

To modernize and improve the government's data collection and management procedures

Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), in May 2022, released the draft National Data Governance Framework Policy (NDGFP). The main objective of this policy is to modernize and improve the government's data collection and management procedures. The draft states that the core aim of the NDGFP is to create an ecosystem for AI and data-driven research and start-ups in India, which will be achieved by establishing a vast repository of datasets.

India is implementing measures to promote transparency and inclusivity. The Framework is based on key elements which involve the creation of the India Data Management Office under MeitY and the Digital India Corporation. Additionally, there will be the development of the India datasets platform, establishment of request-based access to datasets, and promotion of the private sector's participation by contributing non-personal and anonymized data to the datasets platform.
